Add captions in PowerPoint and reuse them in Panopto
Creating captions for your teaching videos improves accessibility and supports multilingual learning. PowerPoint includes a built-in captioning tool that allows you to generate, edit, and translate captions directly from slide audio.
After recording narration on your slides, you can generate captions using Playback → Edit Captions. Review and correct the captions slide by slide, and create translations if needed. When exporting the presentation as an MP4 video, the captions will not export as separate files. However, Aalto’s custom captions tool allows you to extract the caption tracks from the PowerPoint file.
This workflow allows you to update slides and re-export your video without re-recording the whole narration, while keeping captions reusable and consistent.
Upload your PPTX file to captions.webstudio.aalto.fi to retrieve caption files, then upload your exported video to Panopto. In Panopto’s Captions tab, you can attach the caption files and add multiple languages.
