Laine-aliopiston tutkija Ilpo Nosferatun elämä muuttui näytteidenottomatkalla Transsilvaniassa keväällä 2000 täysin. Häntä puri tuolloin paikallinen vampyyri. Lyhyen sairastelun jälkeen Ilpo muuttui itsekin vampyyriksi. Siitä pitäen Ilpon piti ruveta huolehtimaan asioista, joista tavallisten tutkijoiden ei tarvinnut pitää huolta: Hän saattoi tehdä tutkimustyötään vain öisin, nukkui arkussaan päivisin ja vältteli aikaisemmin rakastamaansa valkosipuliruokaa. Tilanne helpottui kuitenkin ajan kanssa, kun tietoisuus vampyyreistä lisääntyi meilä Suomessa. ”Vielä 90-luvulla vampyyrit olivat kummajaisia, joita pelättiin tai vainottiin teroitettujen puukeppien kanssa. Nyt asiat ovat aivan toisin, vampyyritietoisuuden lisääntyminen on vähentänyt syrjintää.” Ilpo joutuu kuitenkin juomaan joka päivä veripalvelun toimittamaa ihmisverta, koska Ilpo ei halua metsästää ihmisiä. Mutta Ilpon muutostarina ei päättynyt tähän: kaksi vuotta sitten Ilpo huomasi olevansa nainen vampyyrin ruumiissa. Aluksi oli vaikeaa, mutta meillä on yliopistolla hieno vertaistukiryhmä saman kohtalon omaaville. ”Nyt – kiitos ihanien vertaisryhmäläisteni – saan väitöskirjani Transsilvanian lumihiutaleista valmiiksi ensi keväänä,” hehkuttaa Ilpo.
