OpenTeaching : Introductory lecture on atomic layer deposition shared

Panopto is a great tool that we have available at Aalto University for making lecture capture.

Yesterday, I gave my first introductory lecture on atomic layer deposition (ALD) in general as a professor at Aalto University. I recorded the lecture with my own laptop, using one of the Panopto sets available since half a year or so at the School of Chemical Engineering.

Neste and Aalto University to begin strategic research cooperation

Aalto University news, 10.10.2018:

Neste and Aalto University have today signed a letter of intent on strategic cooperation and the creation of a new research portfolio. The aim of the cooperation is to increase Finnish chemical industry expertise in chemical engineering, bioeconomy, circular economy, and digitalization. It is also intended to support important growth areas for Neste, such as renewable products and low carbon solutions.

“We are very pleased with this new kind of strategic cooperation with Aalto University. The overall purpose of the projects that the research portfolio includes is to improve the competitiveness of the Finnish chemical industry, and, indeed, of society as a whole. Finland’s undoubted strengths are highly trained professionals and a drive for research and the development of innovations. This know-how and passion for renewal are also the foundations of Neste’s success,” says Matti Lievonen, the President & CEO of Neste.

“We and Neste will together be able to identify and solve complex challenges and to educate far-sighted specialists of the future. Aalto University and Neste have long been partners, but this strategic cooperation model and new research portfolio open the door to an entirely new kind of collaboration. We expect our cooperation to grow and expand significantly over the course of long-term endeavors,” says Ilkka Niemelä, President of Aalto University.

The research portfolio projects are due to begin in the first half of 2019.

Honoured to receive the Berzelius Prize

Aalto CHEM news, 27.8.2018Berzelius Prize for Professor Riikka Puurunen

The Swedish Catalysis Society presented the prize to Professor Puurunen in Copenhagen on 27 August 2018.

The Berzelius Medal is given in the honour of the famous Swedish researcher Berzelius. The prize winner has to be aged under 45 years, female every second time and working in a Nordic country. Each country can come up with one proposal. Professor Puurunen was proposed by the Finnish Catalysis Society. read more >>

2018 Millennium Technology Prize to Dr. Tuomo Suntola

In May, the 2018 Millennium Technology Prize was awarded to Dr. Tuomo Suntola for Atomic Layer Deposition. Once more, congratulations to Suntola for the extremely well deserved prize, and thanks to the international community for the broad support behind the nomination.

Finnish Young Scientist Forum on Catalysis 2018 – report of the event

On April 6 this year, I organized the event “Finnish Young Scientist Forum on Catalysis 2018 (FYSFC2018)” for the Finnish Catalysis Society. In the newest Katse 1/2018 newsletter of the society, a report of the event is published by my colleague José Luis González Escobedo, who is a doctoral student at Aalto University. A copy of the report is reposted in Catalysis Professor’s Open with permission of the author and of the Finnish Catalysis Society.

3rd Finnish Young Scientist Forum on Catalysis

Last April 6, 2018, the third Finnish Young Scientist Forum on Catalysis (FYSFC) took place in Otaniemi, Espoo, organized by the Finnish Catalysis Society. The Forum is a relaxed, yearly event, where PhD students from Finnish Universities get the chance to present their work to their peers, professors, and other Catalysis professionals. The event is also a great opportunity for the members of the Catalysis community in Finland to network and catch up with each other. This year, the organization of the Forum was in charge of Professor Riikka Puurunen from Aalto University. The venue was the landmark Dipoli building in Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus.

In both courses, Panopto lecture capture was made. This feature was much appreciated by the students and can be recommended for other courses, too.
