Week 6

This week we had the brain anatomy workshop, which was fun and informative. Building/drawing our own brain models helped in getting more familiarised with the most important brain parts, and helped especially with understanding the 3D structure of the brain. However, as the brain is a very complex organ, learning the English/Latin terms for each part feels extremely difficult. Of course, not all parts have to be learned by heart, but there is definitely much work in the basics also. Overall, the brain workshop was quite enjoyable as much new information has already been learned during this course. If the basic neural structures were not known, it would be very hard to understand how the brain works.

By shaping the brain from clay step by step helped to outline in more detail where most common structures are located. However, human brain is so complex that this was only an intorduction to the world of brains and most of the strucutres has to be learnt from the course book.

Overall, the first half of the course has been a great beginning to a journey into the fascinating world of neuroscience. We started from fundamental concepts including the structure and function of the neuron and progressed to action potential and synaptic transmission, the fundamental building blocks of the neural networks of the brain. Furthermore, we learned about different neurotransmitters and sensory functions. Learning was greatly supported by the exercises, where we had to explain concepts in our words. Also, checking the right answers for the quizzes afterwards helped to learn things that weren’t so well learned before.
