Week 4
The concept of neurotransmitters is very interesting, and it was first of all beneficial to get to know the exact requirement for a substance to be counted as a neurotransmitter. However, the idea that a neurotransmitter must produce certain response when researched, tells that neurotransmitters are in a way very ideal to be researched. By knowing more about neurotransmitters is also important in order for one to understand the underlying function of drugs, especially for mental illnesses. Nevertheless, as some drugs may cause some harmful side effects, it would be nice to know more what symptoms can be cured with traditional psychological methods, and what symptoms may be better to be cured with medicine.
It’s also interesting that several neurotransmitters have varying effects depending on the type of receptor they bind to. For example, acetylcholine has a completely opposite effect in nicotinic and muscarinic receptors.
