Season’s Greetings from Aalto Catalysis research group

Dear colleagues, collaborators, emeriti, potential future colleagues and collaborators, others,

Year 2018 approaches its end, and it is a good time to look back on the activities of our group in 2018.

Publication-wise, the Aalto Catalysis research group has had a good year. In total ten publications from the current group members and related earlier research at Aalto are out, listed at the end of this email. At the moment of writing this, five articles are “in the pipeline”, to be published in 2019 after peer review is finished (one of them shared in ChemRxiv). The group members have additionally given several contributed/invited/keynote talks and poster presentations at various national and international conferences.

Open Science is a current trend mentioned also in the recent report State of Scientific Research in Finland 2018. Chemical engineering as a field is not considered really open, and surely, our field could benefit from more openness. Contributions of the Catalysis group to Open Science so far have been (i) the participation in and coordination of the Virtual Project on the History of ALD (VPHA, http://vph-ald.com) Open Science effort; (ii) including broader background info in our newest publications, and (iii) sharing manuscript preprints in ChemRxiv and ECSarXiv. Maybe in 2019, we’ll create our first open dataset?

A way of sharing good experimental practices with current and future colleagues has been started in 2018. Proposed by our M.Sc. thesis worker “JJ”, we started recording GoPro video tutorials of equipment usage. It all started from a crazy idea – too crazy not to try. The group picked up the habit quickly; future will show, how useful the videos will be.

A personal highlight for the undersigned has been the 2018 Millennium Technology Prize (MTP) for atomic layer deposition (ALD) and Tuomo Suntola. A joint photo with professor emerita Outi Krause and the 2018 MTP winner summarizes the joy and happiness the prize has brought. Perhaps greatest thing related to the prize is that it has made ALD, a hidden technology that most have not known about, more understood and visible. With the prize achieved, it is good to continue ALD – and other – research in 2019.

With these thoughts, I wish all a peaceful and joyous Christmas time and best of success for the coming year.
