Explore Future Career Paths in Aalto University


LUX HELSINKI is an annual light art festival that takes places every January in Helsinki city center.

We are all keen on finding our true calling in life. Sometimes, we stumble or we lose directions in the way. The wise greek philosopher Aristotle gave us the guidance – ”where the needs of the world and your talent cross, there lies your vocation.” Here comes the question: “How does university education help you find the calling?” Aalto University has different programs in line that support students explore future career paths during their studies.

Besides of studio courses, there are many independent projects that provide students great opportunities to work with real clients. It’s a down-to-earth approach for students to keep track of the world needs and cutting-edge trends. Students get to explore all kinds of possibilities for future career through these projects experience.

More than 20 years ago, Aalto University’s schools created customized business projects. Two to five students from different schools team up a research group to work with companies in various business areas. The clients are from both public and private sectors. In these projects, students work in multidisciplinary environment and carry out their knowledge into practice. Customized business projects also offer study credits with money compensation.


Erottaja Fire Station in Lux Architecture Series

Last October, I was chose to join one of the customized business projects – Lux Helsinki. Four Creative Sustainability Master’s students Julia Renko, Kelly Purcell, Hsiao-Pei Liao and Angela Hernandez from business and design schools worked together with City of Helsinki and Helsinki City Marketing in a pilot project. The aim of the project was to make the annual light are festival Lux Helsinki more sustainable. After four months of research, we developed a digital tool of event sustainability management system with a collaboration platform.

From my own experience, Lux Helsinki project let me explore what my future career could be, and the trends and needs in the current market. Then I can adjust my study plan to gain the knowledge and skills that can prepare me for my future career.
