My interest in reading this paper was in the way of using boundary objects. Paper looks at visual representations and state that they have the particular characteristic of being made with intention of conveying meaning. If I think about the boundary objects used in our case companies, it is true that photos are taken with only communication in mind. Whereas other objects are created without exact communication in mind. For example, manuals are created and used not only on communicating a fault but actually checking the right actions to take to fix the equipment. In the paper two companies are compared: capital goods manufacturer (HighTech) and an architectural design firm (ECA). At HighTech knowledge is exploited whereas at ECA knowledge is explored. The visual practices that are appropriate to exploitation are used when solving structured problems (e.g., maps, protocols). And exploration is needed when the problem is unstructured. Visual representations used for this are sketches and whiteboard diagrams i.e.
