Student groups were used to test different communication media in distributed design reviews. The tested media were face-to-face communication, audio and text (chat). The results show that the text based solution was perceived as least effective communication media. This to me was not surprising since the task was intense and synchronous, thus typing is slowing the team down. Maybe for other types of distributed tasks chat would be more promising.
