This is an introduction to a special issue on role of objects in design communication. People working together need to understand the objects in a compatible way, thus CSCW tools need to support the use of objects to convey meaning. This might ultimately determine the success or failure of CSCW. The issue holds four articles that cover questions, such as how to achieve more effective representations of design ideas, that serve as more effective objects for mediating design communication and what role do the objects play across the organization when participants from different object worlds have to interact.
