Design in HCI is about engineering usability. It follows the perspective of design as engineering – conservative view. This approach de-emphasizes the role of designer.
Author quoting his research says that with the designing for changing user concerns like emotion, interaction, information spaces, experiences etc needs a change in the definition and idea of design in HCI. The author says that the considering designing from all the different perspectives should be considered where on concerns takes the dominant position than others in some particular situation. The adoption of the multi perspective approach to design in HCI will foster creativity and solve the existing problems in HCI.
Designing for experience not possible using design as engineering perspective. There are three main themes-
+ Holistic – consider cognitive, intellectual, rational , sensual, emotional and experience as inter-related aspects while designing UX.
+ Continuous engagement and sense making – continuous sense making by dynamic relationship between sensual, emotional and intellectual levels of engagement at a particular time and place that brings out particular experience
+ Dialogical view of interaction
Proposes design as craft perspective where the focus is on the individual person-hood.
Designing wicked problems – ill formulated, potential unbound, open to alternative formulations with no obvious means of choice or stopping rule are particular to a situation, setting or context.
