Aalto AI Assistant just got a useful upgrade: you can now upload your own PDF file<\/strong> to the chat as background material \u2013 and yes, more than one if needed. This new Document chat<\/strong> feature lets you explore, summarise, and ask detailed questions based on your own documents. Whether it\u2019s a research article, a policy draft, or course materials \u2013 the Assistant can now focus on your content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does it work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  1. Start with one click<\/strong>
    Click the 📎 paperclip icon at the bottom of the chat, choose a PDF file from your computer, and hit open. Then just start chatting as usual. The file works as background material for the Assistant to use in its replies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. See your previous chats<\/strong>
    All your active and past document-based conversations are saved in the menu under \u201cDocument chat\u201d<\/strong> on the left-hand side. You can always return to continue where you left off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Create a dedicated document chat<\/strong>
    If you’re working with several PDFs or want to name a conversation, go to the Document chat section<\/strong> and click the ➕ icon. You can give your chat a name (e.g., “Thesis background reading”<\/em>) and upload multiple documents.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Reminder:<\/strong> Document chat only works if your Data storage setting is ON<\/strong>.
    Check this by clicking the gear icon ⚙️ in the bottom left corner and go to \u201cData storage settings\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why use Document chat?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes, the best results come not from asking broader questions but from giving the AI something specific to work with. That\u2019s where Document chat shines. By uploading your own PDF, you\u2019re giving the Assistant a clear, focused context \u2013 and that can make all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rather than searching through general knowledge, the model concentrates on the content you provide. This often leads to more accurate answers, sharper insights, and fewer misunderstandings. It\u2019s especially helpful when you’re dealing with complex or detailed material: research papers, project drafts, or background readings. You stay in control of the source \u2013 and you can always trace where the answers come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
