Week 9

This week’s subject about mental illnesses was very interesting. Overall, the brain and mental illnesses possess a huge challenge compared to other illnesses, as mental illnesses may be caused by only biological, only emotional, or by both reasons. That’s why mental illnesses can’t be just fixed similarly to a broken leg. Additionally, good medical cures for mental illnesses may solve only one side of the problem.

However, it is important to notice that the brain is still a biological organ with biological flaws, and that’s why many mental disorders may be partially healed with medicine. In addition, some emotional problems may cause big changes even in the brain structure, and sometimes one of the few ways to heal them is using some medicine first.

It was interesting to read about the more detailed explanation and facts about different mental disorders that are not so familiar. For example, it was interesting that the causes for mental illnesses are wide and some of them are for example more genetic, but some are caused by the environmental effects. For example, people with OCD had more often a small mutation in the serotonin transporter gene, but deficiency in niacin from dietary can cause depression and impaired reasoning.
