WAT-maisteriohjelman uusi projektikurssi (WAT-E2200 WAT Project Course) alkoi huhtikuun lopulla. Uusi kurssikonsepti kiinnosti opiskelijoita: 20 opiskelijaa aloitti haasteiden parissa, heist\u00e4 suurin osa WAT-maisteriohjelman ensimm\u00e4isen ja toisen vuoden opiskelijoita. Opiskelijat jaettiin nelj\u00e4\u00e4n tiimiin kiinnostuksensa perusteella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kurssin ensimm\u00e4iset yhteiset tapaamiset pidettiin huhtikuun viimeisell\u00e4 viikolla. Tunnelma oli alkuun j\u00e4nnittynyt \u2013 eih\u00e4n kukaan viel\u00e4 tiennyt, millaisesta kurssista oli kyse! Viikon loppua kohden \u2013 kun teht\u00e4v\u00e4t selkiytyiv\u00e4t ja kukin tapasi sek\u00e4 tiimins\u00e4 ett\u00e4 mentorinsa – pahin j\u00e4nnitys vaihtui innostukseen ja tiimit pohtivat yhdess\u00e4 ty\u00f6skentelytapojaan ja t\u00e4rkeimpi\u00e4 arvojaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u00e4m\u00e4n vuoden projektit liittyv\u00e4t j\u00e4tevedenk\u00e4sittelyyn sek\u00e4 tulvariskien hallintaan. Rambollista saatu haaste koskee fosforin talteenoton teknologioita ja HSY:n tarjoama projekti erityisesti metaanip\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6jen hallintaa j\u00e4tevedenpuhdistamossa sek\u00e4 nesteriskien hallintaa. Tulvariskeihin liittyv\u00e4t projektit tulivat Suomen ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6keskukselta, jossa painopisteen\u00e4 erityisesti tulvariskinhallinnan sosiaaliset n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmat ja H\u00e4meen ELY-keskukselta, jonka haasteessa tiimi p\u00e4\u00e4see soveltamaan alueiden tulvariskiluokitusta. Kunkin projektin tarjonnut ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4n asiantuntija on my\u00f6s auttamassa omaa tiimi\u00e4\u00e4n koko kurssin ajan mentorina. Koska WAT-projektikurssi on osa Aalto-yliopiston Life Wide Learning<\/a> -tarjontaa, mentoreilla on samalla mahdollisuus suorittaa viiden opintopisteen jatkokoulutussertifikaatti avoimen ongelmanratkaisuprosessin fasilitoinnista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lyhyesti projektikurssin konseptista: Opiskelijoilla on seitsem\u00e4n viikkoa aikaa kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 ratkaisu saamaansa alan k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n haasteeseen. Kurssi auttaa opiskelijoita kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4taitoja, kuten ajanhallintaa, projektinhallintaa ja intensiivist\u00e4 tiimity\u00f6t\u00e4 sek\u00e4 tietysti syvent\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 itse haasteen aihepiirist\u00e4 sek\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n ty\u00f6el\u00e4m\u00e4st\u00e4. Osana kurssia pohditaan my\u00f6s projektien laajempia yhteyksi\u00e4 globaaleihin kest\u00e4vyyden kysymyksiin ja mahdollisuuksia edist\u00e4\u00e4 toivottuja tulevaisuuksia \u2013 ongelmanratkaisun lis\u00e4ksi kurssilla p\u00e4\u00e4see siis kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n my\u00f6s systeemiajattelua sek\u00e4 tulevaisuusajattelua. Kurssi edesauttaa samalla opiskelijoiden valmiuksia ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4 omaa ja alansa roolia kest\u00e4vyyden edist\u00e4misess\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WAT Project Course started with excitement in the air<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brand new WAT Project Course (WAT-E2200) of the WAT Masters Programme was launched in the end of April. The new course concept raised interest among students: 20 students enrolled to solve the cases, most of them first and second year students from the WAT Programme. The students were divided into four teams according to their own interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first workshops of the course were arranged during the last week of April. You could sense the question marks in the air: no one actually knew, what the course was all about! Towards the end of the week \u2013 after getting more information on the tasks and meeting own team and mentor \u2013 the slight anxiety was quickly replaced by pure excitement and the teams started to agree on their working practices and most important values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year the cases relate to wastewater treatment and flood risk management. The case from Ramboll is about phosphorus recovery technologies and the HSY case deals with managing ammonium emissions in a wastewater treatment plant. The Finnish environment institute SYKE provided a case on the social aspects of flood risk management, whereas in the H\u00e4me\u00b4s ELY Centre\u2019s project the team gets to apply flood risk evaluation in practice. The experts who provided the cases act also as mentors for the student teams for the whole course. As the course is a part of Aalto University\u2019s Life Wide Learning<\/a> offerings, the mentors get a 5-credits training certificate for facilitating an open-ended problem-solving process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly about the concept of the WAT Project Course: Students have seven weeks to develop a solution to a practical case from the working life. The course helps students to gain important working life skills, such as time and project management, and intensive teamwork, as well as a deeper comprehension of the subject matter of their cases. In addition, as part of the course, the students consider their case\u2019s broader connections to global sustainability challenges and possibilities to achieve preferred futures. Therefore, the course develops students\u2019 abilities in systems a future thinking, as well as in comprehending their own and the field\u2019s roles in promoting sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final seminar of the course, where students present their solutions in pitch-like presentations, takes place on Thursday June 8, 2023, at Otaniemi campus.
