About RIS

Obs! In near future, hopefully already on Oct 2021, all RIS info will be found in the web site of FinEst Centre for Smart Cities (Finestcentre.com)
RIS (pronounced as RISE), purposely associated with any rising things is in a way miniature of the main idea of the FinEst Twins Center of Excellence; that is, a fruitful combination of deep academic research and innovations and a more practical development approach of cities and companies. Integration or even co-living of these two is not an easy task, which is why we are rehearsing, elaborating and practising it 🙂

The usefulness of RIS

One purpose of RIS is to create connections between researchers, and especially between researchers and urban developers. We believe that one strong topic of matchmaking is data. Researchers need it, cities and companies ´have it. The latter ones do not always have resources to fully utilise their data, so we see here a potential setting for collaboration.

Autumn 2020: Data Stories

The theme of RIS for the autumn is Data Stories. That means experiences and insights of researchers and urban developers from cities and companies, dealing with what ever type of data. We are usually happy to tell success stories. However, difficulties and even failure cases can be very interesting too. Think about it and tell me and Matti what kind of data story you would like to share with RIS audience.

Organisation of RIS

RIS happens 10 to 12 times each year, usually monthly. Every research stream of FinEst Twins takes the lead of two session per year.

Main format of the sessions:

  1. Cheers from chairs
  2. Two academic presentations and discussion
  3. Two practitioners’ presentations and discussion
  4. Final words and notions of becoming things
Duration of each session is from 90 to 120 minutes.

(Short) History of RIS

The very first session of RIS was held on the 30.6.2020. Smart City Governance was in lead.
RIS is part of FinEst Twins in collaboration especially with TalTech, Aalto University and Forum Virium Helsinki.
