The Ikea catalogue has become an institution. It has been published for more than seven decades (Connolly, 2020). It is a great example of an artifact that represents the materialization of global flows. But Ikea has decided to stop publishing it (Milne, 2020). The Ikea catalogue 2021 will remain as legend.
This artifact, the catalogue, isn’t just selling furniture. Is it some sort of propaganda publication of the aspirational ‘better’ everyone should desire? What are the values it is trying to sell? Is the Scandinavian interior design dream about to die? Have we reached a significant turning point of mono-culturalization and the end of singularity? Or is the end of a printed catalogue signaling a shift to some new direction?
