On September 24th, 2020, Amazon revealed a new product from its partner company Ring, LLC called the Always Home Cam. The small, compact household security drone promises to protect homes from thieves while also alerting the user if they left their stove on (Siminoff, 2020). It features Always Home technology which is constantly recording the space and identifying any disturbances. This object represents our current societal needs and impulses for consumer goods. Mass surveillance becomes a household object and the barrier between digital data firms and privacy becomes slightly more transparent. Has the COVID-19 pandemic created a turning point in our consumer behaviours towards a more dystopic society? In 2013, Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing shocked western society followed by the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018. We are now at a point where our consent is given to data firms to keep us safe in exchange for our privacy.
