It is 2020 and the Chinese design industry is well established. Yet it is still possible to see a design proposal where the shape of the lotus is scaled up to build a stadium for the best soccer club in China. This is a typical way of creating “Chinese-style” design, not simplifying the image or the object, but directly using it. Interestingly, this proposal is by a foreign designer. The stadium raises questions about what decolonizing design might look like in practice.
