Lithuania has been struggling with redefining its identity after independence from the Soviet Union in 1990. Even though post-soviet countries would initially be described as “Eastern-European”, many would prefer to call Lithuania a Northern-European state and abolish any references to anything Soviet. Yet the evidence of these times still lives not only in people’s memories but also through different artifacts, one being massive grey apartment blocks built to cheaply house the masses.
Jewellery designer Gerda Liudvinavičiūtė has recently brought a fresh perspective to these blocks in her collection “BRUT_LIST”. The author talks about how these buildings create a sense of belonging even in isolation. While the idea of a warm sense of community in cold grey houses is fascinating, another interesting angle is how she managed to make iconic symbols of Eastern-Europe relevant again and found beauty in a part of history which most would like to neglect.
The collection was recognised internationally and won two design awards this year (GIT’s World Jewellery Design Award 2020, II place; Geras Dizainas (Good design) award in Fashion Accessories category).
