Thoughts from the first week

Starting off with the course has been nice and interesting. It’s been a while since the last time I studied neurones and physiology so the first week and lecture my focus has been on repeating knowledge from the past but also continue to expand it. What really fascinates me is how almost everything was familiar and how fast I was able to recall it although it’s been such a long time since I last studied the neurones. The brain and the (long time) memory never stops to fascinate me, and how we are able to learn and memorise stuff of all kinds and then recall it almost as you had worked with it yesterday. The structure of the brain has to be the most complex and amazing computer one could imaging.

One question that came to my mind during the week when learning the material of the week is the following: How far or close are the scientist on a big scale today of being able to connect the physiology of the brain with the cognition? Or are they nowadays even in the beginning of answering this enormous question? Because this is never really mentioned in the teaching but there still seems to be a lot going in the research in this field. This is a question that often comes up in my when working with/learning more about neurones. Looking forward to getting some kind of answer to this during the course…
