Leino, S.-P., Pulkkinen, A. (2012) Design for Human – Virtual Engineering is a Media for Knowledge Transfer, Design2012

Paper describes how virtual engineering can help in knowledge transfer during product life-cycle. It argues that virtual environments can help in bidirectional product life-cycle communication. Product data is looked at different abstraction levels, and knowledge on tacit-explicit scale. Virtual environments seem to fit in the middle on both these scales. Benefit of virtual engineering is gained by richer communication between stakeholders of product life-cycle. For example, assemblers can walk around the virtual product in the virtual environment. While this paper argues the need for product life-cycle communication and understanding context, and provides media for it, it does not state what is the information that needs to be communicated or knowledge to be tranferred.
