Invitation to a session on local science (Oct 12, 2012)

Research Seminar on Local Science: What is it?

We are proud and excited to invite you to a session  on proximity/local science (lähitiede).

Aims of the session

  • What are the motivations for talking about local/proximity science?
  • Who are those close to a researcher?
  • How can we combine the international nature of research with the idea of proximity?

In order to familiarize with perspectives by two of the conveners, you may read (in Finnish) Pasi’s essay about the moral dilemma of flying in academic work and Eeva’s response, both published in the brand new essay collection Researchers in conversations – essays and letters on academic work (ed. by K. Räsänen). Another perspective to local science is offered by Wakefield, spotted by Keijo Räsänen in the heat of editing the essay collection.

The session consists of facilitated group discussion related to the aims of the session based on everyone’s own experiences. Welcome on Friday Oct 12 to meet the colleagues close to you!

Sincerely,
Pasi Heikkurinen, Eeva Houtbeckers & Galina Kallio
