No access to Safari books online

We have lost access to the Safari e-books at the end of last week. We have tried to work this out with the service provider, but they have not yet been able to reinstate the access. There seems to be a technical problem they have yet to locate.

We apologize for the break in service!

Continued problems with Nelli – resources can still be accessed

We are experiencing continued problems with the Nelli portal, with Nelli being off use part of the time. Our e-resources can still be accessed directly at the publishers’ sites in the university network or if in a remote access via the page libproxy.aalto.fi. It lists all of our biggest resources and directs to them via our proxy. If trying to remotely use a resource which is not on the list (eg. individual journals), you can add the proxy to the url yourself; eg. if the address of the journal is

http://iopscience.iop.org/1873-7005/

add libproxy.aalto.fi after the site address:

http://iopscience.iop.org.libproxy.aalto.fi/1873-7005/

We apologize for the inconvenience and break in service!

Renewed access to Nanoscale and Polymer Chemistry

The RSC journals Nanoscale and Polymer Chemistry were available for free in 2011 as opt-in resources. They became subscription journals in 2012 and free access was lost. However, due to good usage statistics, the library has decided to subscribe to these journals and now access has been returned.

SPIE: new platform and more content

The SPIE Digital Library will be moving to a new platform on June 2012. More content will be available on the new platform: an additional 40,000 technical papers dating from 1962 through 1989 will be added to the existing content. This will make the SPIE Digital Library complete, with all proceedings and journal content published by SPIE since it began its publishing program. Aalto University will have access to this new content.

Changes to IEEE Xplore platform

On 1 April 2012 IEEE will release the new IEEE Business Platform, a suite of applications powered by a new services-oriented architecture which includes key enhancements to IEEE Xplore, Member Join and Renewal, and the individual account profile management.

Major changes:
1. IEEE Account (personal account) user name change: After the launch, individuals signing in with an IEEE Account user name (the personal account user name which is used to set individual preferences) will be prompted to change their current user name to their e-mail address. Institutional user names and access are not affected and will remain the same.
2. Saved Searches and Search History will be deleted: All current saved searches and search history records will be DELETED with this release. We encourage all users to copy and paste their saved searches into a document so they can recreate the search after launch. IEEE has communicated to all saved search alert holders about this change. Table of Contents alerts are not affected and will remain active.

New features incorporated into IEEE Xplore with this release include:

  • Enhanced and more streamlined abstract page
  • Enhanced browsing by title with the inclusion of refinements
  • More prominent institutional branding
  • New placement of sign-in links for personal accounts and institutional accounts
  • New and improved IEEE personal account registration process
  • New citation diagram
  • And more

Learn more about the new features:

You and your users can also sign up for live webinar training at www.ieee.org/go/training. All training dates after 1 April 2012 will cover the new features of this release.

We apologize for delivering this information at such a late date!
